The Calabasas Connection – A Drake & Kanye Album Seems Inevitable

A Drake and Kanye West Collaboration Album Can Change The Landscape of Hip-Hop

A Drake and Kanye West collaboration album either sounds too good to be true or too forced to be great. I prefer to go with the first of the two statements but when you get into speculation mode with very few details to your advantage it’s hard to choose a side.

Canada’s most renowned artist, actor, and icon Drake has been an unstoppable force in the music world for the past few years. It’s hard to put a finger on when things began blowing out of proportion for everybody else’s favorite rapper. Was it when he dropped his 2013 anthem “Started From the Bottom” or took over the radio in 2014 with “0 to 100”? Was it when he lit up the sky with every live performance of “Know Yourself”? Or was it when he ethered Meek Mill and dropped a collabo with the most poppin’ mixtape artist of 2015? It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when he took the game over, kind of like the guy who lives right down the street from him.

Chi-town’s lord and savior, Kanye West, has had an immense influence on numerous aspects of culture as of the start of the century. Countless amounts of production credits on some of the biggest hits imaginable, selling out shoes quicker than literally anything ever, the legendary Twitter rants, the VMA’s and Taylor Swift slip up and of course, some of the most incredible, provocative, and brave music catalogs of all time. Ranging from his genre-bending 808’s and Heartbreak to his aggressive energy on Yeezus and all others that accompany the two, it’s impossible to deny the importance Ye has had on Hip-Hop and pop culture as a whole.

One night in the quaint West San Fernando Valley’s gated community of Hidden Hills, these two humongous names and neighbors connected on a level I never expected the two to connect on. In the past seven years Drake has been a mainstream mainstay in Hip-Hop.  Drake and Kanye West have made two songs together. One of those two being the LeBron James based anthem ‘Forever’ in 2009, the other being their recent single cut of Drake’s “Pop Style”.  Now word comes out that Drake and Kaye West have 11 songs done and there’s a billboard up in L.A claiming that ‘Calabasas is the new Abu Dhabi’ with a G.O.O.D Music angel and OVO owl placed under the bold print.

What’s even going on in 2016? Frank Ocean put out two albums, DJ Khaled had Meghan Trainor on his album, now there’s a Drake and Kanye West album coming out? I don’t know how to feel about this. The fact that Drake and Ye are closer to releasing a project than Drake and Lil Wayne doesn’t sit right with me, not one bit. As well as the fact that Ye is closer to dropping a collaboration album with Drake than he is to releasing a Watch the Throne II doesn’t sit too well with me either, even though I can live without new Jay-Z music for a while. Something about this is just off and doesn’t seem necessary. But then again, who the hell really cares? My two favorite artists of all time and two of the most popular people in the world right now are about to put out an album together, that’s all that really matters.
