How I was able to learn EVERY single word of Salt-N-Pepa’s “Shoop” song?! My Mom wouldn’t even let me watch the video. She said their short shorts were inappropriate, so you know I wanted a pair. Either way it proves, preteens are resourceful when need be.

Salt-N-Pepa got hits for days, but this one right here?! Everybody, got their verse or their line that they sing from the depth of their soul. Why was I thanking his “Mother for a butt like that…“? I was 12! Come to think of it those short, shorts probably weren’t the only reason my mom didn’t want me watching that video…

I do, however, have a very specific example as to why this particular song is being discussed and is SO rooted in the Culture. Years ago I was at a brunch in the city with four of my girls. Drinks was flowing and we got to reminiscing and singing, actually in this case rapping (loudly). I don’t remember who was Salt, who was Pepa and who was Spinderella, but I do remember that by the middle of the first verse 99.9% of the brunch spot was singing along with us VERBATIM. It was a whole moment and it was amazing.

If this song comes on you should NEVER be “Chillin’, chillin’ minding your business…” like the lyrics say. You should turn into a 90s video vixen and rap those lyrics like you wrote them. Ladies, grab “The Cutest Brother in here..” to do homeboys part if you need to, get it done.

Released in 1993, “Shoop” was the lead single from Salt-N-Pepa’s fourth studio album, Very Necessary, the group’s most successful album. The song was produced by Salt and Mark Sparks. The song features an uncredited verse by rapper Big Twan.
