You are entering the gates of your most desired job interview and your scalp starts to itch. No matter how much you try and control but your hand finally reaches your scalp, and you start to itch, creating a bad impression. You see, an itchy scalp can even cost you your career!

An itchy scalp is not just because of irregular shampoo-schedule or too much dandruff. It can be due to other serious problems, which if you fail to reckon, wouldn’t resolve. Apart from the scenario, I just cited, itching your scalp is unhygienic and unprofessional too. The reason why I have prepared a list of causes that will give you a detailed insight into ‘why are you having an itchy scalp’:

  1. Seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff

This is one of the most common reasons worldwide and probably why you are facing an itchy scalp, as well.

Until the time yeast present in your body is within the permitted quantities, it will not create any problem. However, it tends to grow on your scalp and other hairy regions of your body. That’s when the problem arises and when it overgrows it forces the body to create an inflammatory response. Itching and flaking are common problems of this overgrowth.

If things are still under control and your itchy scalp or dandruff is on the mild zone, you can preferably select any shampoo of your choice, which contains selenium or zinc pyrithione. However, for the extreme cases, you must use a prescription based shampoo. Apart from this, home remedies for dandruff are always recommended to get rid of this stubborn issue.

  1. Psoriasis

If you observe raised, reddish scaly patches on your skin or scalp, you are probably under the radar of a chronic autoimmune disease called Psoriasis. The numbers of people infected from this are huge –  a recent study revealed that about 125 people worldwide that make 2-3% of the world population have Psoriasis!

For starters, this isn’t communicable, so you cannot get it from other people. Well, the bad news is even experts do not know what clearly causes this, but you are most likely to get infected by it when someone in your family has it.

Doctors recommend over-the-counter medicated shampoos, and to control scalp psoriasis, it must contain coal tar and salicylic acid. If things are worse, it will be wise to not make changes in your lifestyle by yourself instead make an appointment with a dermatologist.

  1. Tinea Capitis

If this is the case, then it surely very evident because of the large effects. Basically it creates round patches of hair loss on your scalp. It is mainly caused by ringworms and is fungal in nature. This infects your scalp and extends deep into the hair follicle. The worst part is they increase over time if not treated properly.

It can also develop on your skin, and if that is so, you can simply buy an antifungal formulation to get rid of it. However, for the scalp, you have to visit a doctor, who will give you oral antifungal medications against the spreading infection.

  1. Head lice

Well, it is not just young school-going boys and girls who are at a threat of lice, but in fact, anyone. And trust me; it is not just a matter of hygiene, because lice prefer clean hair to reside upon.

Most of us are aware of head lice and their effects on our scalp. They look like dandruff, are attached to individual hair strands, and look like tine nits. They aren’t as easy to shake off like dandruff, because they are glued to one’s hair. Now, the best part is that the head lice problem is well recognized.

So, you will have various over-the-counter shampoos that are specialized in treating head lice. However, there is no defined composition, every shampoo comes its own pros and cons and its own set of instructions that must be followed to avail best results.

  1. Allergies and Allergic reactions

If you are someone who is fond of hair colors and dyes, or any other treatment of hair, or even eczema, and atopic dermatitis, you are probably allergic to all or any one of it.

If so, you are in a better place than any other people on the list, because allergies tend to vanish once you recognize what chemical are you allergic to and get rid of it.

While an itchy scalp is perceived as a minute problem, it can lead to embarrassment in public places. Thus, it’s better to get it treated and restrict its growth. If the cause is small, it might just demand a few basic lifestyle changes like changing your shampoo, conditioner, etc. However, if the causes are extreme, then the doctor’s suggestion must be your final decision.
