Inspired by the life of former New York Giants linebacker Spencer Paysinger, comes a powerful new drama immersing us in the world of high school football, determination and pivoting through two considerably different cultural lifestyles. Staring Daniel Ezra (Spencer James) and Taye Diggs (Billy Baker), “All American” comes to the CW premiering Wednesday, October 10th giving us a mix between the original “Degrassi” and “Friday Night Lights”.
Spencer James, an athletic prodigy on track for the pros is recruited during a game halted by a drive-by at his Crenshaw High School by coach Billy Baker to play for Beverly Hills with promises of a better education and opportunities. With encouragement from his best friend, mother and younger sibling, James makes the transition to play football in unfamiliar territory. But in a world different than the gang-ridden streets of South L.A., James struggles to fit-in and his talent is quickly met with contention from Beverly Hills students including the star quarterback who plans for his demise.
It’s been five years since the network, CW has headlined a show focused on teen drama. This first season of the “All American” brings forth familiar issues of racism, addiction, identity crisis, greed, and sexuality. Serving as executive consultant, Paysinger brought his influence to the writers’ room as well as the actual set, ensuring the football action created was realistic.
“All American” also stars Bre-Z Monet Mazur, Greta Onieogou, Samantha Logan, Michael Evans Behling, Cody Christian and Jalyn Hall. The show, two years in the making is produced by April Blair (“Reign”), Greg Berlanti (“The Flash,” “Riverdale”), Sarah Schechter (“The Flash,” “Riverdale”) and Rob Hardy (“Power”).
