A River of White Tears: Jump, Justin Timberlake
Justin Timberlake is officially cancelled.
We should have cancelled him when Britney Spears decided his ain’t too proud to beg behind was a good for nothing.
We should have cancelled him after he left Janet Jackson to take the blame for his mistake during their 2004 Super Bowl performance “wardrobe malfunction” where he grabbed at her clothing and exposed her breast. Justin didn’t have much to say about this, instead leaving Janet, the African American woman who put him on, to suffer most of the heat, admonishment, and consequences for HIS actions during that incident.
We should have known. But now we know.
Former N*SYNC front man, Justin Timberlake, who made the hearts of preteens throb and made his fortune off of the inspiration and culture of African-American music and audiences is the halftime performer for the NFL’s 2018 Super Bowl. This is an offer that no African American in their right mind, or genuine ally to the African-American community would accept. Jay-Z was reportedly offered the opportunity to perform the halftime show for the 2018 Super Bowl, but he rightfully refused.
Supporters of justice, freedom, and all that is good and right in the world have launched a full out boycott of the NFL due in part because of the NFL’s blacklist of Colin Kaepernick, who took a knee during the national anthem to protest the continuous state-sanctioned police killings of unarmed African Americans.
By accepting this performance at the Super Bowl, Justin Timberlake is following the historic trend of his white brethren and sistren from Elvis to Gaga to Miley Cyrus who continue to steal, borrow, and appropriate African-American culture to their advantage, while blatantly disregarding and disrespecting issues affecting the African-American community.
Just like our mama used to say, Justin, “We brought you into this world, we can take you out.” Let’s make him cry so good he wants to jump.
