MTV Is Bringing Back Total Request Live! – Here’s The Details On MTV TRL 2017
Originally hosted live from New York City by Carson Daly, the MTV TRL revival will premiere October 2nd and will introduce viewers to new talent, including rapper and comedian DC Young Fly and Erik Zachary, a radio host for 103.5 KISS FM in Chicago. A newly renovated studio facing Times Square will be bigger and better!
Total Request Live was a staple on MTV from 1998-2008 –it was a daily destination for all music and pop culture. TRL became a huge hit among MTV viewers with Carson Daly as host. It was the place to be for an artist dropping a new album or going on tour! The show welcomed special guests, who would stop by to give interviews, clear up rumors, and debut their new music videos. The show was taped live, and fans never knew what to expect or who might show up. A group of fans was permitted in the studio during the live taping, and an even bigger crowd would gather outside of the studio. VJs interacted outside with the crowd to gauge reactions about videos, celebrities and other pop culture topics.
Now, the unforgettable New York-based program is returning.
The hourly program, will feature a rotation of five rotating hosts and 3 social media superstars including D.C. Young Fly, Erik Zachary, Amy Pham, Tamara Dhia and Lawrence Jackson. Eva Gutowski, Gabbie Hanna and Gigi Gorgeous will serve as social media correspondents.
D.C. Young Fly
John Whitfield, better known as (D.C. Young Fly), is a comedian, internet personality, actor, and rapper best known for his “roasting sessions” videos on Instagram and Vine. He is one of the recurring cast members of Wild ‘N. Out DC Young Fly has more than 5 million social media followers. DC Young Fly has been co-signed from huge comedians like Kevin Hart. Along with his comedic endeavors, he is musically talented and has worked alongside artists like B.O.B, Kevin Gates, TraeThaTruth. He has also had roles in the Christmas comedy-drama film, Almost Christmas which was released worldwide on November 11, 2016, The Quad, and the BET biopic The New Edition Story aired this year.
Erik Zachary is currently an on-air host for iHeart Media’s 103.5 KISS FM in Chicago. After graduating from Columbia College Chicago, Erik climbed the ranks at iHeart, launching a new country station and syndicating his show to Boston and Sacramento. In addition, Erik’s YouTube channel features celebrity interviews, comedy sketches and vlogs.
Amy Pham is a DJ, actress and television host who has performed at events and festivals with Snoop Dogg, Maroon 5, Lady Gaga, Ciara, Will I Am, Iggy Azalea just to name a few. She’s booked multiple national campaigns for Forever 21, Nike, Reebok, Sony, and has worked alongside names Jennifer Lopez, Ryan Seacrest. CoverGirl chose her to be one of their new ambassadors for their “So Lashy Mascara” Campaign.
Lawrence K. Jackson is a journalist, actor, producer and television/radio personality who comes from Sean “Diddy” Combs’ music cable network Revolt TV. Jackson, has interviewed celebrities including Usher, Taraji P. Henson, Adam Silver and Oprah. His exclusive interview with Kevin Durant resulted in a 30-minute special for Revolt, narrated by rapper Wale.
Tamara Dhia was born in Baghdad, Iraq. She is an actress, writer and on-air host from Complex delivering pop culture news to millions of viewers daily. She’s interviewed some of the biggest names in pop culture including Zayn, DJ Khaled, Amber Rose, Kylie Jenner and Desiigner.
The YouTube star and beauty guru was named one of Time Magazine’s “25 Most Influential People on the Internet” earlier this year, and her documentary, This is Everything: Gigi Gorgeous, premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. As a transgender female, Gigi has worked with brands such as Crest, Pantene, Too Faced, MAC, and L’Oreal, and currently has a year-long endorsement deal with Revlon.
The YouTube content creator, actress, author, designer, and influencer has over 8 million subscribers on YouTube. She also starred in YouTube Red first original series, Me and My Grandma. She recently launched a clothing line and has a book coming out in February 2018.
The comedic superstar first rose to fame on Vine, eventually earning 4.5 million YouTube subscribers. She stars in YouTube Red’s Escape the Night series, has her first book coming out in September and performs regularly at The Laugh Factory in Los Angeles.
President Chris McCarthy revealed during an interview with The New York Times. “It is the centerpiece. “It’s the right route,” McCarthy told the newspaper. “When you talk to artists and they say to you, unaware of what we’re doing, ‘Can you bring back TRL’? We’d be crazy not to reinvent that. “MTV’s reinvention,” he added, “is coming by harnessing its heritage.”
The TRL franchise will debut on Monday, October 2. The daily live show will air from the network’s iconic Times Square studio and become the prime destination for youth culture and a meeting point for millions of fans. The digital extensions will feature platform-specific, premium content across YouTube, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and Musical.ly.
