The Weeknd Reinvigorates XO Fanbase with “Starboy” Title Track

Although I love “Can’t Feel My Face” as much as anyone else, the radio friendliness of just about every song on The Weeknd’s Grammy winning Beauty Behind the Madness turned me away from his new sound. As an original and avid follower of the XO movement, this past year marked a time in which I often questioned what the Toronto native had been doing to what was once his mysterious, ominous persona.

“Starboy”, the title track to his upcoming album releasing this Thanksgiving weekend on November 25th, brings that persona back. “20 racks a table cut from ebony/She cut that ivory into skinny pieces/Then she clean it with her face but I love my baby” simply screams out never-before-heard House of Balloons lyrics and is honestly one of the dopest things I’ve heard in a song all year.

I’d previously heard that Abel was going to be working with producer Doc McKinney, who had been by the Toronto native’s side for the creation of his beloved first two mixtapes.  Let alone the fact I was already excited to see what that would result in, the last thing I expected was for Daft Punk to produce a song as well, a gem at that.

The Weeknd’s new single has me overly excited to see the direction he takes with this upcoming project. Though I am not a fan of his display of abundance of output to the mainstream, his first four projects were unforgettable and if Starboy is anywhere close to that level of edginess and rawness, sign me up!
