What A Time To Be Alive Review
Two of the hottest stars in Hip-Hop decided to join forces and give the world a collaboration mixtape and everyone forgot how to act. To put this into perspective, no two artists have collaborated on a full project since Kanye West and Jay-Z gave the people Watch the Throne in 2011, so this is kind of a big deal. Future is coming off his sensational album Dirty Sprite 2, which has catapulted him into everyone’s headphones or car stereos. Drake has been riding the wave from the twitter beef Meek Mill started but unfortunately couldn’t finish. Drake and Future have silently become the hottest one-two punch in rap and I’m not complaining. Here’s my full What A Time To Be Alive review…
Let me just start by saying, if you’re expecting every single song on this mixtape to be a club banger, you’re wrong. Although, there are a couple ones here and there, this project is mostly something you can put on and vibe to. Twenty-two year old producer, MetroBoomin, led the production on this mixtape by producing or co-producing the first ten tracks. I don’t think anyone would have envisioned the hottest producer out right now would be the 22 year old from St. Louis but he’s changing everyone’s opinion as we speak.
Right off the bat, you assume from hearing the first track Digital Dash that this is going to be club hit after club hit because it sounds more like a Future Hendrix track but then the album suddenly gets Aubrey Drake Graham with songs like Plastic Bag which is another ode to the strippers in true Drake fashion. I think WATTBA really plays into the fans who are fans of both artists because it really brings Drake into Future’s world and vice versa. To conclude this rollercoaster of hard trap beats and smooth piano melodies with a hint of Gregorian chant undertones, Drake left the people with a classic “freestyle” to once again remind everyone why he’s the best. He effortlessly recalls events while name dropping who was there and what was going on at the time to paint this picture and tell a story which is classic Drake. Not to mention there was a small Meek Mill diss just to keep him on his toes.
All and all, I rate this album a 4.5 out of 5 and I think this is something that will be a buffer until both Drake and Future drops their next solo projects and break the internet once again.
