Welcome to the recap of the week 07/11/2010 – 07/17/10

THE DREAM IS CHRISTINA MILIAN’S NIGHTMARE

The urban entertainment world was sent into a tailspin after news of The Dream & Christina Milian’s breakup hit the Internet. Pictures of the producer/singer canoodling with his assistant while vacationing in the Caribbean ignited the controversy, followed by Milian seemingly confirming the affair via her Twitter page. Later, The Dream (real name: Terius Nash) sent out a rather heartless press release claiming that his September 2009 marriage to Milian was over before the couple rang in 2010. However, all of the drama and media attention couldn’t salvage sales of The Dream’s new album, “Love King,” with the record still struggling on the charts. So much for “all press is good press… ”

KELIS’ FLESH TONE FALLS ON DEAF EARS

The eclectic singer released her new album, “Flesh Tone” this week to disappointing sales figures. How disappointing? According to Hits Daily Double, Kelis’ fourth US release only managed to move 7,833 albums off the racks, even though lead single “Acapella” hit #1 on the Billboard Dance Chart. Lets hope ex-hubby Nas can afford to make this month’s alimony payment…

MO’NIQUE TELLS WOMEN TO SUBMIT TO MEN

Oscar winner Mo’nique made some interesting statements when she advised women to submit to their men more. While many praise her advice, others wonder why women in the 21st century are still being told to take charge of their lives…until they’re in a relationship. On her show the actress said/host said:

I thought I had a penis too. And in the relationships before my husband, I really believed I did, until you get around some wiser women and they say to you, “You pee sitting down for a reason. He stands up for a reason. Know your position.”

Classy, right? Besides, isn’t this mentality similar to that of Mary Jones, Mo’nique’s abusive and self-hating character in “Precious”? We see how well that worked out for her…

JESSE GETS CAVS OWNER FINED

Emotions are still running high in Cleveland after LeBron James’ infamous exodus to the Miami Heat. After a scathing open letter to Cleveland fans in which Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert verbally chastised the superstar player, Jesse Jackson called for him to be fined by the NBA. The league listened and charged Gilbert $100,000 for his personal attack on James. The online rant had many people, including Jackson, wondering if Gilbert sees his players more as slaves than free thinking employees. Either way, Cavaliers fans from the economically embattled Cleveland banded together to offer to pay the fine. Though he was touched by the public support, Gilbert declined the offer and agreed to pay the fine himself.

PETA SLAMS JANET

PETA had some not-so-nice words for Janet Jackson after her recent photo campaign for fashion line Blackglama, in which she donned a mink fur coat:

It’s amazing what celebrities will do when their careers are on a downslide, but we didn’t think that Janet was this desperate. Surely she knows enough about suffering and unjustified death to recognize that both occur in the production of a fur coat. We are asking her to think again and to donate these stolen skins to be used as bedding for animals orphaned by other human-caused disasters, such as loss of habitat.”

Lets hope PETA doesn’t crash a Jackson family barbecue…

MASHONDA OPENS UP ON EVERYTHING

Singer Mashonda dished to Vibe magazine about her failed marriage to producer Swizz Beatz, how he told her about his affair with current fiancée Alicia Keys on Mother’s Day 2008, and alleges she was raped by a music executive when she was first in search of a record deal and even lays half of the blame on herself for the assault. After a rough few years, Mashonda seems to be on the mend from heartbreak and scandal, and is using her memoir, “The Death of a Mermaid” to help her in the process. But one can only hope that she lets go of the blame she’s put on herself for the sexual assault. No matter what the situation, rape is never the fault of the victim.
