Paris by way of Harlem rapper, 2 Dash Tone goes in on another cut with a Gallic vibe, this time Nicki Minaj’s “Moment 4 Life.”

Whereas the “Niggas in Paris” remix’s French connection was obvious–and titular–the Pink Friday single’s is far more nebulous. It is found in the lush strings that power the track, in the subdued yet secretly driving drums that back them and in the overall sense of luxury the track contains. Minaj’s pretty little lilt and Drake’s smooth flow is replaced here by Tone’s steady-as-granite delivery, spitting a long bar sans hook (kind of).

It works well, a traditional rapper cutting a strong path through the plush velvet.

A brief aside: as I write this, young men–predominantly Black and poor–are fighting fiercely to put an orange ball through a metal ring lofted 10 feet above the ground to make a bunch of old men–predominantly white–very rich. And while I know this inequality and plantation system exists, I can not help but get swept up in the Madness. Which got me to thinking. “Moment 4 Life” should replace “One Shining Moment.” The update would be a monumental step towards the next generation for elderly gatekeeper CBS.
